HECMA is the preeminent organization for higher education case management professionals. We officially began in 2011 as a grassroots effort to provide peer support and collaborative networking for individuals providing case management services at post-secondary institutions. Our organization has grown in direct relationship to the growth of our field. We are proud of all that we have accomplished in just a few short years. In 2008, Virginia Tech invited individuals from across the country to meet on their campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, to discuss the changing landscape of higher education and specifically, the evolution of Case Management. Representatives from thirteen unique institutions of higher education attended, and the gathering was called the Case Management Roundtable. What attendees did not know was that they were laying the foundation for a formal association of case management colleagues that would be come the Higher Education Case Managers Association. Each subsequent Roundtable gathering has followed a similar model to our very first. 2008 Amy Powell and Erica Woodley identify the need and establish an online community for individuals serving in case management roles. Virginia Tech hosted the 1st Roundtable; 25 attendees representing 13 institutions were present. 2010 JJ Larson creates the resource center website, “Institutions of Higher Education Case Managers Consortium”, featuring protocols, job descriptions, and other resources. 2011 Our first needs assessment evaluation for case managers was implemented at the Michigan Roundtable. Members reviewed the feedback and decided to move forward with a national organization. The name Higher Education Case Managers Association was establish and mission/vision statements accepted. 2012 HECMA established our first Leadership Team members at the Iowa State Roundtable. We defined Higher Education Case Management, established bylaws and a constitution, membership structure, branding and a logo. The Landscape Survey was conducted, gathering data on the demographics and work of our field, with results presented at Roundtable held at Iowa State. 2013 HECMA leaders delivered a full day pre-conference workshop for the annual NASPA conference in Orlando, “Case Management in Higher Education: Overview of an Emerging Field”. We established a dedicated website and documented and categorized over 850 resources for case managers in our library. 2014 HECMA held our second elections, establishing our second leadership team. We were approved for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, making us a tax-exempt non-profit organization. The Journey Survey was conducted, focusing on the tasks, policies and processes that influence the work of our field, with results presented at Roundtable held at the University of Arizona. 2015 HECMA accepted our first corporate sponsor, the Recovery Division of Acadia Healthcare, represented by Tom Bennett. We transitioned our entire website and updated and streamlined access to the library. The Quality Improvement committee, led by Paul Tongsri, developed and tested the first Program Review Evaluation Guidelines for case management in higher education. Our Roundtable was approved for 8 continuing education hours through the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). 2016 HECMA was accepted as the 43rd member organization in the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). We accepted our 2nd corporate sponsor, the Center for Discovery. HECMA members presented a pre-conference training at the annual NASPA conference in Indianapolis, “Case Management and Higher Education: Building Upon Your Institution’s Capacity”. With the leadership of Jennifer Henkle and Nina Critz, we implemented a mentoring program to match new case managers with more experienced case managers. Our Roundtable was approved for 12.5 continuing education hours through the National Association of Social Workers. 2017 HECMA published the HECMA Assessment Cookbook and the HECMA 2017 Membership Survey & Analysis (available to members in the Library).
